Hey Siri, What Are the Signs of Addiction?

Telenovelas have been around since the early 1900s, meaning this addictive entertainment has been around for over 100 years. What started in Cuba as a story written in newspapers later spread to radios across South America and now to televisions all across the world. Countries all over the world have their own versions of melodramas that are inspired by telenovelas. Turkish dizis and Korean kdramas have also grown in popularity through the years.

What could possibly be so interesting about these dramas that their popularity and production exponentially increased over time?!

Well.. a better question to ask would be what is boring about these dramas? Then I would have a very short answer to give you as opposed to going on and on about what makes them so interesting. ANYWAY.. I will now get to the point.

Melodramas feature all of our favorite things:
  • Drama
  • Attractive people

I bet you thought I would list more.

Let us dive in!

Drama is very important in a melodrama. I mean it is literally in the name. It can vary from a love triangle, an affair, exploration of class differences, to even murder. Well, in a really good melodrama you will probably see all of these. The more drama, the better! Right?!

Let us all be honest with ourselves. There are celebrities we love because they are such eye candy. Please take a moment and google "Burak Özçivit". Oh my! Your blood pressure is rising! Breathe in, breathe out. I know, he is very attractive, but we must stay calm at least until you finish reading this blog post. Of course, we love these celebrities for their talent as well but there is no denying their visuals play a role. In a melodrama, the main characters will almost always be quite possibly the most attractive people that have stepped foot on this earth. The directors know how to pull in their audience!

Although melodramas are typically exaggerated and have very intense plot lines, they provide us with entertainment that can sometimes be related to our everyday lives. We enjoy this because we can immerse ourselves into the show and we will always be left wanting more until the next episode is released.

I personally do not know anybody involved in a love triangle where love interest #1 is actually a robot and love interest #2 is secretly a villain, so.. melodramas for the win!

Next week, we will dive more into the various elements I mentioned and their underlying meanings! See you then!

  1. I loved this post. It was super well written and funny, and I feel like I could really feel the personality from the writing. I agree with you that melodrama's are addicting. They definitely take you out of reality for a bit. I also agree that melodrama producers definitely cast well because most of the main characters in these telenovelas are actually stunning. This was a great take Sacira!
