Melodramas actually do hook you.

When I was first asked to choose a melodrama to watch, I knew immediately that I wanted to select a telenovela since I'm always looking to better my Spanish. However, knowing what kind of drama I wanted to watch based on its origin is about as far as I could get. When it actually came down to picking a telenovela, I found myself in a bit of a choice paralysis.

Eventually, after about an hour of searching "best telenovelas" on Google, I became overwhelmed with options and started to question what some people deem "good" versus others after scrolling through an even more overwhelming amount of reviews. This is when I decided to select a random telenovela based on how much I liked the name, and I stumbled upon the series, "Aurora."

Little did I know, I wouldn't even have time to move my computer from my desk to my bed before I was absolutely hooked. "Aurora" is such a complex story, I can hardly keep up, and it's almost the challenge of following the plot that forces me to binge watch it every time I turn it on. It's dangerous in a way to come back to my room in between classes because I know how hard it will be to turn it off and make it on time to my next building. I have definitely learned that you can't look away from a telenovela for even two minutes, because within those two minutes, you probably missed a cheating scandal, a fight, a death, and a dance scene. (There's been a lot of rewinding to see something I missed by multitasking while Aurora is on.)

Overall, I now fully understand the appeal of dramas and I know that any show I could have picked would have gotten me hooked without question. After all, that's what they're made to do...

  1. These telenovelas hook us so quickly! You are so right; I end up binging my melodrama every time I turn it on. I did not realize that even the first five minutes there would be suicide, a mistress, and so many other things already revealed. I already feel so tied to the characters and how their story pans out.

  2. I did the same thing where I googled good/best telenovelas and was overwhelmed by people’s opinions of what makes a telenovela good/best. I tried reading the descriptions of some but nothing stuck out, and I didn’t know what I wanted to watch. I ended up going back to the telenovelas Dr. A had talked about. I chose Yargi because I knew I already liked crime shows. Anyway, my point is that first stepping into watching and picking a telenovela was also overwhelming for me. There are so many, so it makes sense that you picked Aurora because it had a pretty name that caught your attention.

  3. I agree that dramas often hook us so easily. There is so much going on in a matter of seconds in each, and every episode of a telenovela. I find it interesting how you were looking for a show that people deemed as "good", but ending up not even choosing your telenovela based off the commentary of others. That's pretty indicative of the fact that telenovelas are generally very captivating, despite any negative perceptions of the show that some people may have. I didn't choose a telenovela to watch, but I did choose a k-drama that was quite literally impossible to not be hooked into it in a matter of seconds. There were so many heart-wrenching scenes, and constantly something entertaining was happening.
