When starting this class, I did not have much prior knowledge of telenovelas and Turkish dramas. However, I realized that many of the shows and movies I would watch growing up with my mom and grandmother have similar elements of melodrama, with emotional love stories and dramatic plot twists. It was interesting to find out that I had already been exposed to some elements of telenovelas without even knowing.
As I researched to find the telenovela that I wanted to watch and analyze, I tried to keep in mind what we learned about the varying types of telenovelas and the common tropes that appear. Rubi, in particular, stood out to me because even though it definitely makes use of the more typical tropes, it features a protagonist who acts as the antagonist in her own story. I have never really seen a series whose main protagonist is embraced as the villain and unapologetically "evil", especially a female role. I am excited to watch and see how this story will play out.
