A few years ago, I started to watch K-Dramas (along with some C-Dramas). I began to realize how much I loved the genre of melodrama. While in class, I did notice quite a few differences & similarities between the genres. One difference in the structure wise is that in K-dramas there is 16 episodes (almost always) and the story will always wrap up within those episodes while Telenovelas continue for a long period of time before wrapping up. Another major difference that I noticed would be that the leads in a Telenovela meet within the first episode and fall in love; however, in K-dramas the leads usually do not fall in love/confess until about episode 8 (at least in the good ones). Additionally, something that I am noticing as I watch my Telenovela is that in K-dramas the story is exploring the leads trauma that happened to them in the past, usually when they are kids. However, in a Telenovela the story is giving the character's the trauma as they try to get together. Although there are a few differences, they are actually relatively similar in the way the episodes are shown and the overall plot lines. I have started to enjoy watching my Telenovela and I hope to watch more after the class is over because there are some that seem interesting!
