My Experience with Melodramas

I first got introduced to melodramas through my grandmother, my mother, and my sister. We used to all sit by the television and watch Indian melodramas that would air on Jaya TV or Sun TV (the South Indian equivalent of Telemundo, etc). I remember those moments to be extremely memorable and comforting as they brought the entire family together. My dad would pretend like he wasn’t interested in the shows we were watching, but eventually get extremely invested in them. Indian tv serials would contain several of the same elements that make up telenovelas. The first Indian tv serial I watched was a show by the name of Nadaswaram. This show was based on a family living in a small town in India. From what I can remember, this show followed the lives of the people in this family and how they all lived together in the same house. This tv show touched upon how it was to live in a joint-family household in India. A joint-family is multiple generations, uncles, cousins, basically almost everyone in a family living together in the same house. I feel that this show was a hit due to many Indian families being able to relate to it as this was the norm pre-2000s and most of the viewers grew up in this type of household. I really liked it because it gave me a chance to spend some time with my family, and I loved all the melodrama that occurred in the show.

I first got introduced to telenovelas through Jane the Virgin, like many others in this class. Seeing Jane sit with her abuela and her mom to watch telenovelas reminded me of my own family. I was very interested in taking this class due to it being about telenovelas, but when I got here, I realized that I didn’t actually know as much about telenovelas as I thought I did. Dr. A has opened my eyes to the various aspects of telenovelas, what differentiates telenovelas from regular melodramas, and so much more. This class has introduced me to the various kinds of telenovelas, the different tropes used, how historical events like the Cuban Revolution impacted them, etc.
