Coming into this class, I believed I had no prior knowledge of telenovelas and Turkish dramas. While this is mostly true, I discovered that I actually do have previous exposure to some melodramatic television. During Dr. A’s lecture on what makes a telenovela a telenovela, she pointed out the similarities and differences between other melodramas and the classic telenovela. Learning this made me realize that I have in fact been exposed to melodramatic television in the form of Nigerian and Jamaican melodramas. When I was little, my hairdresser would play the melodramas as she would do my hair, and she still plays them from time to time at my appointments now. While Nigerian and Jamaican melodramas are a bit different from telenovelas, there are some similar aspects that I found familiar like the dramatic plot sequences and love stories. Finding these similarities has made me super excited to begin watching and analyzing a telenovela or Turkish drama because I loved the Nigerian and Jamaican melodramas as a kid even if I rarely got to watch them to completion.
