This class has exposed me to telenovelas and Turkish dramas for the first time in my life. As we watched and studied these dramas, I realized that although I haven’t ever been exposed to these types of dramas, I have plenty of experience when it comes to Korean dramas. I found out through this class that Korean dramas and telenovelas often like to portray the female lead as a “damsel in distress”, and the man as rich and also saving the woman from said distress. Even if there is certainly a difference in the language, the content of these two dramas is often similar. I have noticed one distinct difference between the two, which is that often K-dramas are shorter in length (lasting up to 12-16 episodes), while telenovelas often go on for a very long time. I have recently started a Korean drama called “Twenty-five Twenty-one”, which I am also currently analyzing in order to do my report for this odyssey. It retains aspects that some telenovelas and Turkish dramas contain, such as creating the humorous and romantic atmosphere that many telenovelas and Turkish dramas have. It’s about a woman and a guy who come from essentially two distinctly different backgrounds, but both of these individuals learned to find similarities in each other’s situations and even learned to make one another better through certain methods of encouragement.
I have actually watched Twenty-Five Twenty One and I do think that it is a good melodrama with several elements similar and different than a Telenovela. In my opinion it is like a Cinderalla story for each of the characters but in their own way, like for Baek Yijijn it is a backwards cinderella story which then gets progressive where for Na Heedo it is more of a normal but less severe Cinderella. In my opinion I think that Twenty-Five Twenty-One is a bit more dramatic/suspenseful than the telenovela I am currently watching, cafe con aroma de mujer (the newer version), so I hope you enjoy it!
