This Villain Is Not Smart

The telenovela that I am currently watching is the newer version of Cafe con Aroma de Mujer and although I thought that the villains were supposed to be super smart and cunning, I feel like my main villain is actually kind of dumb. There are several villains in my telenovela. There is the evil mother-in-law who only wants the best for her children, there is the ex-fiance that is trying to get back with the male lead, Sebastian, and then there is the main villain of the story, Ivan. From the very first episode we are able to see that Ivan is actually stealing money from his fathers company and he gets caught by his father, who I call Old Vallejo. However, after a large argument with Ivan, his father suddenly has a heart attack and dies. That all happened really quick and was quite surprising because I was sitting there like "he's actually dead?" As Old Vallejo was the only one who knew about Ivan being the culprit behind the missing money, Ivan then tries to cover up what he has done and blame several other people. However, he is really bad at it. Any time he begins to talk about the missing money he tries to overly encourage how he is not guilty, which only makes him appear more guilty, and no one really buys what he is saying and still suspects him.

I mean, doesn't he always kind of look guilty? In addition to stealing money from his family's company and trying to become president of the company, he is also a cheater. He had a girlfriend, Lucrecia, who he was decent with but then was cheating on her with some other girl. His solution to try and not get caught? He proposed to Lucrecia. So now, they are getting married while he is still cheating on her and scheming with some other girl as a part of his huge scandal. Additionally, he is also doing a really bad job of covering up his cheating.

All of my "villains" in my telenovela are just either not doing enough to break up the main couple and being really unsuccessful, or making horrible decisions that reveal all of their corruptness. Overall, the telenovela has remained relatively tame and not that dramatic, which in my opinion is a little upsetting because I am used to such suspense.

  2. Unfortunately, I think this is just something that happens in telenovelas, especially with the remakes. The villains are often just plain old bad. Personally, I tend to like the villains more than I do the main characters in telenovelas. I just find that the protagonists are too soft and predictable, where a villain adds suspense and drama to the story. The best villains are smarter, calculating, and more driven towards a goal than the protagonists, which just makes them more interesting characters to follow. It's funny to me that you mention how dumb Ivan is, because situations like the one you describe are always super annoying in shows. In what world does proposing to your girlfriend mean that you won't get caught cheating? And how is your girlfriend dumb enough to fall for that? It just makes me face palm while watching the show.

  3. You are so right and your frustration is so valid!! Telenovelas, Dizis, or melodramas in general are way more enjoyable when the characters and their arcs are strong, especially when it comes to villains. For example, in my Dizi, Sen Cal Kapimi, one of my main villains, Kaan Karadag was extremely frustrating because he was so good at being evil and conniving! He constantly found a way to intervene in the character's personal lives in such random and annoying ways, that I found myself screaming at the screen whenever he appeared. In general, a dumb villain just becomes a waste of airtime and like I said there's honestly no point in even watching dramas sometimes when the dilemmas are so weak. The show isn't as satisfying to watch when you don't have someone to absolutely despise!
